Christmas gathering for Covid-safe people without families in Toronto, 2025

Image of two gingerbread cookies. One looks like a Christmas tree, and one has a gingerbread man in a Covid mask.

Why:

I’m active in many Covid-safe circles online, and I know a lot of us have been abandoned by close friends and family due to our supposedly bizarre insistence on avoiding the plague like the plague.

Weird, eh?

This Christmas 2025 is likely to be very emotionally difficult for many of us who are gulity of the crime of being correct too early.

For the past seven Christmases, I have been with my romantic partner and his family. I really have no family of my own left. But this year, he couldn’t stand my Covid avoidance anymore and broke up with me. I’m still immensely heartbroken, my soul has a gaping wound. Imagine being forced to choose between love and not getting infected with a virus that has been scientifically proven in countless studies to cause brain damage, immune system damage, and destroy cells from the mitochondrial level. I’ll probably have PTSD from being forced to make that choice for the rest of my life.

I have been greatly dreading Christmas this year, a time that usually makes me very happy. But I know a lot of us are in similar situations. So my and a few people’s Christmas loneliness problem can be solved by us spending the day together.

Because it is a bit of a leap of faith to spend Christmas day with someone you don’t know very well, I’m providing as much information as possible about my idea and my home to help you make an informed decision.

Neurodivergent people, gay people, trans people, queer people, elderly people, young adults, disabled people, and people of all faith backgrounds as well as agnostics and atheists are all warmly welcome (as long as you’re Covid-safe)! Christmas Day in my home is a secular event that focuses on Santa Claus, Peaunts cartoon Christmas spirit, and highly progressive social values.

What:

A small gathering in my Etobicoke Lakeshore skyscraper condo apartment, not far from High Park. Up to six other Covid-safe adults are welcome to attend. The attendance limit is due to the size of my apartment, my responsibility to provide some beverages and food to attendees who test negative on a PlusLife Covid NAAT, and my responsibility to provide PlusLife tests to attendees who don’t have their own NAAT or PCR tests.

Young adults and older adults are all welcome. If a potential attendee has a child or two who are 12 or older, I may permit that as my exception to the all adults idea. But it would be difficult for me to include young children at this event. But when I say older adults are welcome, that definitely includes senior citizens.

Long Covid and other physical disabilities can generally be very well accommodated, especially if I know what your needs are in advance. It’s possible to get to my apartment in a wheelchair or with other mobility devices because of the automatic doors, ramps, and elevators in my building. Disability support dogs are also welcome to attend. If such a dog does attend, I will even try to provide treats. But please let me know in advance because I may have to put my teddy bear family in a safe place!

Possible fun activities:

  • Christmas music and Christmas movies!
  • Multiplayer gaming, including Mario Kart 8 and Persona rhythm games
  • Monopoly, chess, jigsaw puzzles
  • Anime
  • Classic TV comedies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s

For gifts, we could either do a Secret Santa (with all items $40 or less each) or do a group arts and crafts project where we each give what we made to one other person. And this is why I’m announcing the event two months in advance, because that stuff takes a bit of planning!

There will be non-alcoholic beverages and zero expectation for anyone to drink alcohol unless they really want to. Alcoholic beverages, cannabis edibles, and smoking/vaping cannabis (the latter to be done on my balcony only) may be permitted and even provided for, especially if there are no teenage children in attendance.

I will try to provide beverages and food according to people’s stated preferences. But bringing your own potluck meals and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages would help as well. I’m pescaterian (vegan but with fish), but food with meat, dairy, and possible allergens is okay as long as such ingredients are communicated to the group, and you know someone will eat it. (I won’t eat food with meat or dairy in it, but another attendee might.)

How:

Covid safety- All attendees must wear a KN95, N95, P100 or equivalent (baggy blue surgicals and cloth masks aren’t equivalent!) in the common areas of my apartment building and also in my apartment until you’ve been NAAT or PCR tested negative for Covid.

If you have your own NAAT (such as PlusLife) or PCR testing, you may test before the event as long as you can provide a photo of your test result that has been taken the day of the event.

If you cannot provide your own NAAT or PCR testing, please let me know in advance. I will PlusLife NAAT test you in my home at my own expense. A mucus sample can be taken outside on my balcony, and then you may wait inside my apartment with your respirator on until the PlusLife NAAT test is complete, with a negative result.

– To be clear, you will wear a respirator on your way to my apartment, whether or not you NAAT or PCR tested beforehand. If you come to my door and I don’t see a respirator on your face, I will ask you to leave.

– If you have a negative NAAT or PCR taken on Christmas day before you get to my place and a photo of your test result timestamped on your phone (all phone photos are timestamped, no special software required), you will still need to wear a respirator on your way to my apartment, but you may take your respirator off once you’ve shown me the negative test result while inside of my apartment. (The same applies if you text or email me the photo because I don’t want you infected on the TTC or in my building on your way to my apartment after testing in your home.)

– If you require a NAAT test to be provided for you, please let me know before Christmas. You may have a PlusLife NAAT test at my expense. You will leave your respirator on, only have your respirator off when you’re on my balcony outside to take a mucus sample. Then you will put your respirator back on before coming back into my apartment. Then you may way inside of my apartment with your respirator on until the PlusLife dock shows a negative test result. If and when there’s a negative test result, that’s the mandatory condition for taking your respirator off while in my apartment.

To be clear: You must put your respirator back on while you are outdoors and on the balcony! You may not re-enter my apartment until you put your respirator back on.

Once you have a negative test result, you are free to be maskless in my apartment and have fun eating and drinking!

If the result is positive, you may either stay at the party with your respirator on (do not take it off, even for a second!), or you may choose to return home.

The same applies to me! I will PlusLife NAAT test and keep my respirator on while in my home until there’s a negative test result for me.

You may only be without a respirator on inside my home if you have a same day negative NAAT or PCR test. RATs are insufficently accurate for being maskless in my home.

My apartment also features an HVAC that only shares air with the outdoors, totally isolated from my neighbors! My apartment has good ventilation, usually below 600ppm CO2 when it’s just me. And I also have multiple HEPA filters running. Although, none of these air quality measures substitute respirators and testing.

Transportation- I will give you my address when you’ve agreed to attend and agreed to my Covid safety rules. For public transportation, the front entrance to my apartment building is footsteps from both the 501 Queen streetcar and from a bus that departs from Old Mill subway station. But if you take the TTC, I will expect you to wear a respirator during your entire commute.

The best way is to take the taxi so you won’t have to park, and nor will you be on crowded TTC vehicles. If you’d like to take the taxi but cannot afford it, please let me know before the event and I’ll do my best to cover your taxi fare. If you can donate money to my Christmas party fund to help me pay for someone else’s taxi fare, it would be greatly appreciated! If there haven’t been enough donations to cover taxi fare for those who cannot afford to do so, then I will try my best to cover your fare out of my own funds.

You may choose to drive a car to my building. But I must warn you that parking may be limited on Christmas Day due to other people having guests over. These are massive skyscraper apartment buildings with a dedicated underground paid visitor parking structure, but there is a chance that visitor parking may be full on Christmas Day, even if there are thousands of parking spots. If visitor parking is full, you may try parking at Humber Bay Park or the Metro plaza. There may be free spaces there, but I cannot guarantee it.

For those reasons, taxi is the most recommended method of transportation. TTC is convenient to my place, but the TTC is a significant Covid danger and I will have to trust that you kept your respirator on. The method of transportation that I recommend the least is driving, due to parking. But you may still be able to get a parking spot, especially if you arrive before noon. Parking isn’t free (unless you’re lucky to grab a spot in the Metro plaza or Humber Bay Park). Expect to pay standard “Green P” parking rates in the visitor parking structure.

You aren’t expected to bring anything but to be clothed, with a respirator on your face when you arrive. (If we decide as a group to do a Secret Santa, then please bring an inexpensive gift. Dollarama is welcome!) But if you’re able to help and you’d like to do so, bringing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, potluck dishes, and/or donating to the Christmas party fund Ko-Fi is appreciated. (Ko-Fi donations will go towards PlusLife NAAT tests and taxi fare for those who need it.)

Who:

I’m a 41 year old woman with no family, but my plush animal family. I’m a cybersecurity hacker nerd, and the founder of Stop Gen AI. I’m a political activist in the areas of fighting Gen AI, fighting for the climate, fighting for Covid resistance, and fighting capitalism. I’m wonderfully neurodivergent, an AuDHD eccentric. If you’re willing to take a chance on spending Christmas with people you don’t know well, I will make sure that only good people who are Covid-safe are present.

Where:

I will give you my address when you confirm your attendance, I won’t share my address on a public webpage. But for the sake of planning and decision making, I live on the Toronto lakeshore near where Etobicoke (Mimico) and Parkdale/High Park meet. I live in an extremely tall apartment tower, and this is what the inside of my apartment looks like. But I will be sure to have a small Christmas tree up, and plenty of decorations.

When:

Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25th, 2025. I will welcome arrivals as early as 10am. Please don’t arrive later than 1pm. (So there’s a 10am-1pm arrival time window.) If you’re driving, your chances of getting a parking spot in multilevel underground parking garage for visitors increases the earlier you arrive. You are welcome to enjoy most of the day with us, but you may leave when you want. But all guests must leave no later than 10pm.

Let me know if you’d like to do something similar for New Years Eve!

Christmas event inquiry form:

Submitting an inquiry through this form doesn’t mean you have agreed to attend. Feel free to submit an inquiry if you aren’t sure whether or not you’ll be attending. The information that you give me will help me plan. But I will expect you to be sure whether or not you’re attending by December 22nd.

Will you require for me to pay for taxi fare? (I may cover fare up to $50, but I may be able to be more generous if there are Ko-Fi donations.)
Will you require me to provide you a PlusLife NAAT test, or will you NAAT or PCR test the same day before you arrive? (Acceptable tests include PlusLife, Lucira, and Metrix for NAAT at home, or a PCR test from a medical clinic. RATs will not be accepted.)
Would you prefer to do gifts Secret Santa style (each person brings one inexpensive gift for one other person)? Or would you prefer me to provide arts and crafts supplies, and we each make a craft for one other person?

Do you have any particular dietary needs? (Multiple choices are okay. If I need more details, please let me know by email before the event.)
  • Add your answer
Do you have disability accomodation needs that I should know about? (Multiple answers are okay.)
  • Add your answer
Do you have a partner, a support person, and/or teenage children whom you may want to bring? (Children under 12 may not be allowed. Multiple choices are okay.)

Do you agree to wear a respirator while on your way to my apartment and to abide by my Covid safety rules? (I will turn you away at my door if you’re barefaced. No exceptions.)

These are examples of good respirators that I want to see. Keep it on your face until you’re inside of my apartment and have a negative same day NAAT or PCR test! No exceptions!

And these are bad masks. I won’t accept them under any circumstances. And nor will I accept a “good mask” if it doesn’t stay on your face the entire time you’re outside of my apartment and/or waiting for a PlusLife test result. Nose poking out, “chin mask,” etc. are all completely unacceptable no matter how high grade your respirator is. Anyway, these are examples of bad masks that are insufficient for airborne respiratory protection:

If you need a “good mask,” please try Donate A Mask or Mask Bloc TO during the weeks before Christmas.
